Jesus is a partner in the pain of the oppressed and the example of his life offers a solution to ending the descent into moral nihilism. By: David Sadzin, The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity, By: The verdict, as much as the killing, sent shock waves through the African American community, recalling a history of similar deaths, and the long struggle for justice. There isn't much I can add about this book that other, more prolific reviewers have already mentioned in their reviews.

The Beloved Disciple John said that there is no fear in love, rather, perfect love drives out fear (1 John 4:18). In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings.
While you might imagine him to be puffed up, Pete Greig is entirely the opposite. But, it is *both* a book of serious theology and serious spirituality, one that both accounts for suffering and oppression in personal terms (fear, deception, & hatred) *and* offers a Jesus that stays true to the Gospels.
Pete Greig, Narrated by: David W. Swanson,
Thurman’s book was influenced heavily by studying the life of Mahatma Gandhi.
My initial response to reading this book was to resist. He is enchanting, down-to-earth, friendly, and most of all, very normal - and yet he tells preposterous tales about prayer (and they're true).
Why has Christianity, a religion premised upon neighborly love, failed in its attempts to heal social divisions?
Only through self-love and love of one another can God's justice prevail.
Dr. Thurman exquisitely discusses the experiences of living as a Christian Black American in this country, specifically through his experience as a rural Southerner.

Hatred does not empower - it decays.
In this audiobook, Rob Bell explores the concept that what people really want, more than anything, is to understand their purpose here - so much so that it gives them an abiding sense of awe and wonder. At a time in which some within the African American community are questioning the place of the Christian faith in the struggle for justice, New Testament scholar McCaulley argues that reading Scripture from the perspective of Black church tradition is invaluable for connecting with a rich faith history and addressing the urgent issues of our times.
It is rumored that the Civil Rights hero, Martin Luther King Jr., carried in his pocket a copy of Howard Thurman’s “Jesus and the Disinherited.” Rumors or nay, the similarities between these two magnanimous Christians and their Christo-love-centricism are undeniable. Once I was ready for change, I embarked upon reading Mr. Thurman's work with an open mind.

It is also a testimony of what the teachings of Jesus can do to restore dignity and hope of those disinherited.
Drawing on the work of philosopher James K. A. Smith and others, Swanson proposes that we rethink our churches' habits, or liturgies, and imagine together holistic, communal discipleship practices that can reform us as members of Christ's diverse body.
